What should I blog about?

(and the 7 most profitable blogging niches)

You desperately want to start a blog but you have one burning question:

What should I blog about?

Deciding what to blog about is an important step when starting a blog. Your chosen blog topic or niche could mean the success or failure of your blog.

Should you blog about your hobbies or passions?

It depends. It is great if you pick a niche that you know a lot about. A topic that interests you and you enjoy talking about. But the question you’ve got to ask yourself is: will there be lots of people like me that are interested in this topic?

To set up your blog for success, you need to pick a niche that is popular and has the potential to get a lot of traffic. Especially if you intend to make money from your blog, it’s important to pick a niche that has a proven track record as a money making niche.

In this post I’ll cover:

  • 3 ways to find popular blog topics
  • The 7 most profitable blogging niches and
  • How you can monetise your blog

Let’s get to it!

How to find popular blog topics?

How do you know if your chosen blog topic is popular?
How do you know if your niche is a money making niche? To answer these questions, ask yourself this:

Am I solving a problem?

To make money with your blog you need traffic. To get traffic you need to offer something of value. You need to give your audience what they are looking for. You need to solve their problems.

Think about how often you google a question; How to start a blog? How to make money online? People go to Google to search for answers. So give them the answers they’re looking for.

The next question you should ask:

Is it an evergreen topic?

Evergreen topics are those topics that are always relevant and always in demand. They are timeless topics.

If you ask yourself: ‘Will people still read this a year from now?’ and your answer is yes, you have found yourself an evergreen topic.

Evergreen topics are great for your blog because they have a long lifespan, which means one blog post can still make you money years down the track. #YesPlease!

Evergreen topic examples

‘How to save money’ is obviously an evergreen topic. Everyone likes saving money and it really wouldn’t matter if it’s 2021 or 2028, this topic will always be sought-after.

Another evergreen topic would be: ‘How to lose weight’. People always want to get fit and improve themselves so a lot of topics in the fitness niche are evergreen.

I know what you’re thinking: ‘Haven’t these topics already been blogged to death?’

Yes, they have. But there is a good reason for that. There is still an audience for it. As long as people are googling: ‘How to save money’, you have an audience and you have a blog topic. And it doesn’t matter that there are many other bloggers writing about the same topic, because you will give your own spin to it and make it yours. You will have your tribe of readers that connect to you.

Having competition in the blogging world is actually a good thing; it means you’ve picked a profitable niche!

3 ways to find popular blog topics

1. Use a keyword tool

To find out if your chosen topic is being searched in Google, you can use a keyword tool.

Ubersuggest is a great (free) keyword tool that gives you the number of searches per month for certain keywords or phrases in your country.
Just type in a specific question related to your niche and see if people actually search for this.

For instance, if you want to write a blog about personal finance, you could type in: ‘How to save money?’ As you can see this is a very popular topic and on average it sits around 49500 searches per month (in the United States).

Another evergreen topic would be: ‘How to lose weight’. Just check with Ubersuggest, it gets around 165000 searches per month.

Don’t worry if your chosen blog topic gets less than 1000 searches. If your topic is quite specific you will get less searches but your competition could be a lot lower too. Aim to get a minimum of 100 searches per month for each chosen blog post topic.

2. Use a content analyser tool

To help you find what content is in demand you can use a content analyser tool. I’m going to mention 2 tools here that I find pretty useful when I need some inspiration.

Answer the Public looks at search engines’ autosuggest data to show what people search for in relation to a given keyword.

Simply enter a keyword, click ‘Get Questions’ and it will give you a ton of potential blog topic ideas, that are all based off things people are actually entering into search engines.

Buzzsumo is a great tool to analyse the popularity of blog content by looking at your competitors. If you go to Buzzsumo and type in the domain name of one of your competitors, you’ll see a list of their most popular posts. It also shows which social media platforms they use to promote their blog and their total engagement.

You can also type in a topic or question to see who blogs about it and how high the total engagement is. Here’s a screenshot for the topic ‘Travelling with kids’.

3. Use Google

If you want to see if a topic is popular, just google it. You will see how many bloggers are writing about it, how in-depth their articles are and if they are missing something. With a little bit of research you might even be able to find a gap in the market.

Okay, if you’re still not sure what you should blog about, you can pick one of the following niches. I’ll list the 7 most profitable blog niches (in no particular order) and how to monetise them.

The 7 Most Profitable Blogging Niches

1. How to make money

This is obviously always going to be a popular evergreen niche. Who doesn’t want to make money? There are a few sub niches that fall under this topic: Frugal living, how to save money, personal finance, investing. This is a very competitive niche and to be successful you need to know what you are talking about.

How to monetise this niche: write an e-book, launch an online course, ads.

2. Health & Fitness

Another very popular niche. Any topic that helps your readers to be the best version of themselves will always be in demand. Losing weight, getting fit and living a healthy lifestyle are highly searched for topics.

How to monetise this niche: Affiliate marketing, create & sell your own product, sponsored posts, sell fitness video subscriptions, ads.

3. Lifestyle & Travel

What is a Lifestyle blog? Yes good question. It can basically be about anything, whatever your lifestyle is.

Are you a snowboarder and you travel around the world chasing the everlasting winter? Great, I’m sure you have some product you love that you can promote to your winter crazed readers.

How to monetise this niche: Affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, ads, create your own product.

4. Beauty & Fashion

There are a lot of Beauty blogger & vloggers out there but hey, we know now that’s because they are making money! With Instagram and Pinterest predominantly being scrolled by women, this is an easy niche to promote. Because it is quite competitive it might be a good idea to niche down a little bit. Like Burberry is known for their trench coats, you could be known for your fluffy cropped jumpers. Find what you love and do it well.

How to monetise this niche: Affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, ads, create your own online shop.

5. Craft & DIY

Sewing, crochet, macrame and many other crafts are crazy popular on Pinterest. Craft is very visual and if you have good quality photos of your projects or how-to tutorials on youtube you can grow a profitable craft blog in no time.

How to monetise this niche: Ads, sell your craft on Etsy, affiliate marketing for craft supplies, write an e-book.

6. Food

Everyone likes having their favourite recipes on hand so if you’re starting a food blog make sure to pin your recipes on Pinterest. This could create a lot of traffic that you can monetise through ads. You could also create you own product (think Jamie Oliver) or recommend your favourite kitchen equipment through affiliate marketing.

How to monetise this niche: Ads, write a book, sell your own product, affiliate marketing, sponsored posts.

7. Parenting

Last but not least; the mommy blogs. This niche has really taken off in the past few years. Did you know that it this has turned into a multi billion dollar industry?

Yes I know, crazy!

It is totally understandable though. If you are a stay-at-home-mom what could be better than starting a business from home? You get to spend time with your kids and write blog posts when they have a nap.

How to monetise this niche: Affiliate marketing, create a product, sponsored posts, ads, write an e-book.

Okay, so these are the 7 most popular money making blog niches.

Thank you so much for all these great tips! I never would have thought of some of them. I’ve got a mental health niche blog which isn’t in the popular money making blogs list but I believe if I show my work off to the right people it will work. It just depends on how you go about things I believe x

Hi Ruth, Just because these are the most profitable niches doesn’t mean you can’t make money from any other niches. Mental health is a pretty big topic these days and definitely think you could create a successful blog around this topic. It’s all about knowing where your target audience “hangs out”. All the best 🙂
