Despite all the Pinterest changes in the last few years, Pinterest is still one of the best ways to grow blog traffic.

I get Pinterest traffic to my website every day and as long as I stay consistent with my pinning schedule, it keeps growing and accumulating over time!

What is Pinterest… actually

A lot of people are confused about what Pinterest really is.

Pinterest is not a social media platform (as many people think) but it’s actually a visual search engine. So it’s similar to Google in the way that you can type in keywords in the Pinterest search bar and then Pinterest will show you the best content for these keywords.

This obviously makes the use of keywords important for us bloggers, so if you want a blog traffic increase from Pinterest it’s a good idea to use keywords that people are actually looking for. (More on that in a minute…)

Is Pinterest a blogging platform?

No Pinterest is not a blogging platform and you can’t actually blog on Pinterest. If you want to start a blog you’ll need a blogging platform like Blogger or WordPress.

If you want to promote your blog however, you should definitely give Pinterest a go because Pinterest promotion is one of the most effective way of growing your blog traffic.

How much traffic can you get from Pinterest

There are plenty of bloggers that get around 50.000, 100.000 or even 200.000+ page views from Pinterest per month.

These kind of numbers are hard to reach with other social media platforms, so Pinterest is clearly one of the best ways to get traffic to your blog!

How much traffic you can get from Pinterest will depend on the following 4 things:

1. How popular your blog niche is

If you have a popular blog topic that gets lots of searches on Pinterest you can obviously expect to get more traffic from Pinterest. If your blog audience is mostly female and your blog topics are visual this will boost your blog traffic even more.

Pinterest is great for food bloggers, travel bloggers, home decor bloggers and other visual blog niches. It is less effective for business blogs, education blogs and tech blogs.

2. How long you’ve been active on the platform

Pinterest traffic can take a while to build up. Don’t let this dishearten you though, because the longer you’re on Pinterest (and you’re pinning fresh content regularly) the more traffic you’ll get.

The magic about Pinterest is that your pins live on the platform for many years (opposed to social media posts that disappear in a matter of days) so over time you’ll have a bigger quantity of pins that are circulating on Pinterest, accumulating in more and more blog traffic.

3. How consistent you are

If Pinterest loves anything it’s consistency. If you pin the same amount of fresh pins to Pinterest everyday, you’ll see an upward trend in your Pinterest views.

A fresh pin is a newly created pin to either new or older content. If you don’t have much blog content yet, you could start with one fresh pin per day.

4. How often you share new content

Adding new content to Pinterest is always a good thing. But consistency is more important than quantity. So it’s better to add one new blog post per week than adding 5 posts in one week and then nothing for 3 weeks.

Some people write new blog posts every day, but I think doing that might be a recipe for burnout. It’s better to pace yourself and share one quality piece of content once a week.

This will create a schedule you’ll be able to stick to, making you more consistent for the long run.

Step 1. Set up a Pinterest Business account

The first step to Pinterest success is setting up a business account. You need a business account so that you can get access to your account analytics, enable Rich Pins, and have the option to advertise with Promoted Pins.

Pinterest Setup For Success

Step 2. Create Your Pinterest Profile

Your Pinterest profile is quite important because here you can use keywords that will help your content get found in the search results. To help you find high search volume keywords, you can use a Pinterest SEO tool like KeySearch.

I love KeySearch, it’s super easy to use and it gives you lots of ideas for blog post topics as well.

How to optimise your Pinterest profile

1. Add a profile picture – Add your business logo or a photo of you (with a smile!)

2. Add your business name – Make sure to add keywords here!

3. Add your user name – Add your business name as your user name.

4. Add your about info – Your about section is a great place to add your main and secondary keywords. You only have 160 characters so be strategic! Explain what you do and include a call to action.

Step 3. Set Up Your Pinterest Boards

Now it’s time to create your Pinterest boards. I recommend that you start with at least 10-15 boards that relate to your niche. Once you’ve filled these with some pins, you could add more boards so you have 20-25 boards.

To help your pins get found in the Pinterest search results, you need to include keywords in your board titles and descriptions and pin only relevant content to your boards.

How to find the best Pinterest keywords

It’s important to treat Pinterest as a search engine which means you have to use keywords in your Pinterest profile, in your pin titles and descriptions, board titles and descriptions, and even on the pin image itself (yes Pinterest can read the text on your pin!)

To find the best keywords for Pinterest it’s a good idea to use a Pinterest SEO tool like KeySearch.

KeySearch is not only great for finding keywords for Pinterest but also for your blog content. You simply type in a key phrase in the search bar and it will give you a list of search terms that people actually look for on Pinterest.

Here’s the Keyword search results for “How to grow succulents”. As you can see it will give you other related search terms and their search volume as well, which is a great source of inspiration for new blog posts.

Step 4. Enable Rich Pins

Rich Pins add more information to your pin from the website content it is linked to. If something changes on the original webpage, the Rich Pin information will update to reflect that change.

There are 4 types of Rich Pins:

1. App pins
2. Product pins
3. Recipe pins
4. Article pins

STEP 5. INSTALL A SOCIAL SHARING PLUGIN ON YOUR BLOG

To make it easy for your readers to share your blog post on Pinterest you need to use a social sharing plugin. I use Social Warfare and I love how it adds large social sharing buttons to my posts.

STEP 6. ADD A PINTEREST PIN TO EACH BLOG POST

With a plugin like Social Warfare you can share the images in your blog post. Most images in your post however are not suitable for Pinterest, especially if they’re horizontal. This is why you need to add a Pinterest optimised image to every blog post. Images that work best on Pinterest are vertical with a 2:3 ratio.

The Pinterest pins that I add to my blog posts are 600 x 900 pixels and I create 1000×15000 pins that I upload to Pinterest directly.

How to create Pinterest pins

You can create your Pinterest pins for free with Canva or if you want to create lots of pins quickly I recommend you check out RelayThat. This layout editor designs your pins (and other social media graphics) for you. All you have to do is add your pin title, your colours and a few photos from their stock photo library and RelayThat designs 122 layouts that you can tweak and download. BEST PINNING PRACTICES

Now you’ve got your Pinterest business account set up properly, and your blog posts are optimised with a vertical pin image and social sharing buttons, it is time to start pinning.

How often should you post on Pinterest?

At the start you’ll be pinning more from other accounts but once you get enough blog content you should be pinning mostly your own pins. Try to be consistent and pin between 5 and 10 pins per day. Make sure to try different amounts and see what works for you.

Pinterest gives priority to fresh pins so creating between 1 and 5 new pins per day is the best way to grow your Pinterest traffic.

You can create new pins for a new blog post, an old blog post, an opt in freebie, a landing page, a digital product, an affiliate product or a service.

How to pin a website to Pinterest

If you have Social Warfare installed, you can click the Pinterest share button and pin directly from your blog post.

You can also upload your pins straight to Pinterest by going to the top bar in your Pinterest home page and clicking on Create > Create Pin.

A third way to upload your pins is with a Pinterest approved scheduler like Tailwind.

With Tailwind you can schedule pins to several boards in one go. I recommend only sharing your pins to your most relevant board and maybe one other board and to space this at least 6 days apart.

Do you need a Pinterest scheduler?

You don’t have to use a Pinterest scheduler, but I highly recommend it because when you pin your pins manually it is very time consuming and most likely not very consistent…

…and Pinterest is all about consistency!

I use Tailwind and I love how it saves me a lot of time.

I bulk create my pins (often 40 or more at a time) and then upload them to Tailwind all at once.

Next I copy and paste my pin title and url quickly to all pins for the same post. I also copy and paste the  descriptions but make sure to include several different keywords so my pins for one blog post can be found for several different search terms.

Using this Pinterest scheduling strategy is a lot quicker than manually posting to Pinterest, with the advantage that your pins are spaced out over the day at times that pinners are most active.

• Schedules pins at night. I live in Australia but the majority of my blog
traffic comes from the US. Tailwind will schedule pins when the majority of my audience is online, which can be at 2am, so depending on where you live, this can be a big bonus for you.

Remember that Pinterest loves new content, so uploading 2 or 3 new
pins per day will really help to grow your views and blog traffic.
