What is on-page SEO?
On-page SEO is everything you do on your website to improve your site for search engines and your audience.
A well optimised site is important because it will create a better user experience which will result in a lower bounce rate (people leaving your blog quickly).
When people stay on your blog longer it indicates to Google that your site is worth visiting and has valuable content. Google will take this into account when ranking your site in the SERP’s (Search Engine Result Pages).
What should be optimised on your website?
When optimising your website the following aspects are important:
Nobody likes waiting for a website to load, so making sure your website loads quickly is important for user experience.
Web users are notoriously impatient so to prevent people from clicking the back-arrow you’ll need to optimise your site to load within 2 seconds.
There are some great plugins for this, I’ll mention them below in my on-page SEO tools list.
Your site design will determine how user-friendly your website is. Using a lightweight WordPress theme that loads quickly is a must-have for an optimised site.
Some of the best lightweight themes are:
Other things to keep in mind when designing your site are:
- Clear navigation
- Not too many ads and pop-ups
- Plenty of white space
- Large easy to read font (18pt)
- Increased line-height for easy on-screen reading
- Using headings and sub headings
- Short paragraphs
- Optimised images
More than 50% of online searches are done on mobile devices, so it’s important to make sure that your website is optimised for mobile viewing.
To make sure your site is mobile friendly you can use one of the WordPress themes I mentioned above and to monitor for any mobile issues you can use Google Search Console (more on this below).
Your content is the most important component of your site and to be able to rank in Google you’ll have to write articles that cover the topic in depth. Try to answer all questions your audience might have so there is no need for them to look elsewhere.
You’ll also want to add a variety of keywords (that are related to this topic) in your blog post and to find the right keywords you’ll need a keyword research tool.
Why do you need on-page SEO tools?
On-page SEO tools are very useful when you’re trying to improve your website’s SEO.
There are two types of SEO tools:
- SEO tools that help you monitor your site’s search performance and website health.
- SEO tools that help you find the best keywords that your site can rank for.
Both these tools are equally important because your site will only rank in search engines when your site is healthy and when you are targeting the right keywords.
Why do you need a site performance tool?
Having a fast loading website without any errors is an important ranking factor. To make sure your site is performing at its best it’s a good idea to monitor your site performance regularly.
Some things you should monitor are:
- Website speed
- Mobile performance
- Crawling errors
- Core web vitals
Why do you need a keyword research tool?
To make sure you’re targeting the right keywords and key-phrases it is important to use a keyword research tool. You simply can’t guess how popular a certain keyword is or if your blog could even rank for this keyword, this is where your keyword research tool comes in.
A keyword research tool will tell you how many searches a certain keyword gets per month so you know if it is worth targeting this keyword.
It will also tell you if your blog can rank for this keyword which is dependent on your blog’s DA (Domain Authority) which shows how important your blog is compared to other sites.
SEO tools for site performance
Ok now you know a bit more about on-page SEO and why it’s important, let’s have a look at the best on-page SEO tools:
1. Google Search Console
Google Search Console is a free SEO tool that helps you monitor your site’s search performance and website health.
It’s a must-have tool for website owners because it will warn you if there’s anything wrong with your website (which could result in a drop in ranking).
Google Search Console will help you:
- Identify and fix website errors
- Check mobile performance
- Monitor indexing and crawling
- Request indexing of updated/new pages

Moz is a popular all-in-one SEO software suite that contains tools designed to improve search engine visibility. I use Moz for its Free Domain Analysis Feature which allows me to see what my Domain Authority is, where my backlinks come from and what my top ranking keywords are.
Try the free Domain Authority Checker here
Another handy tool is the Moz Bar Chrome Extension. Install this on Chrome and when switched on you’ll be able to see what the DA is of websites in the SERP’s. This is very handy when you’re trying to work out if you can outrank other sites for certain keywords.
To get some guidance on where to put keywords in your page or blog post it’s a good idea to install the Yoast SEO plugin.
After installation you’ll find a Yoast section below each page or post where you can add your post title and meta description and get feedback on where to add keywords in your post like the image below.
You can find the free Yoast plugin in your WordPress plugins.
4. Page Speed Insights
A free tool to help you check your website loading times. Simply type your domain name in the box, click the analyse button and you’ll get a site analysis in a few seconds.
Another great website speed testing tool. I’ve use this one for my site and you can see the results below under WP Rocket.
6. WP Rocket
WP Rocket is the best website optimisation plugin that will help tremendously with reducing your site loading times.
I got this plugin a little while ago and it instantly took my site from a C grade in GTMetrix to an A grade (see screenshots below).
As you can see it took my site from a Fully Loaded Time of 8.3 seconds to a Fully Loaded Time or 1.8 seconds. And my Time To Interactive goes from 3.5 seconds to 1.2 seconds.
I was very happy with this result and if your site is slow to load I highly recommend getting this plugin.

I’ve been using RankIQ to write new posts quickly and update some older blog post and love how it’s very easy to use (unlike some other keyword research tools).
