Is Blogging Worth It? Or Is It A Waste Of Time?
Are you thinking of starting a blog but you’re not sure if blogging is still worth it?
You’re probably wondering: Who reads blogs anyway? Are blogs still a thing???
Or is it too late to start a blog?
Well I have good news, less good news and exciting news…
First of al, yes blogging is still a thing, there are plenty of bloggers out there making a full time income with their blog.
The less good news is that it’s not a get-rich-quick scheme. Blogging takes time and effort and if you’re new to blogging, there’s definitely a bit of a learning curve.
But here’s the exciting news: Once you start making money with your blog, most of this income will be passive. This means that once you make a certain amount of money per month, you won’t have to do much work to be able to maintain this income.
How good is that? Doing the work up front and then reaping the benefits for years to come!
This is what makes blogging worthwhile. The older your blog gets, the more content you have and the more traffic and income you start accumulating.
So why do so many people think blogging is a waste of time?

Why do so many people blog?
With about 600 million blogs on the web, you must wonder; why do so many people blog?
Well, I think blogging draws a lot of people in because of the flexible work-from-home lifestyle and the potential to make a lot of money.
When I found out that quite a few bloggers make $10k, $20k or even $50+ per month, I definitely thought it was worth a try!
The idea of starting their own creative business that makes passive income is appealing to lots of people, so it’s not that surprising that blogging is popular.
So, Is Blogging Worth it?
Yes blogging is totally worth it! Blogging has an unlimited income potential, flexible working hours and you can work from anywhere in the world!
What’s not to love?
I’m super grateful I started my blog a few years ago because it gives me a lot of freedom and it brings in enough money for me to go on holidays and live the lifestyle I enjoy.
So why do so many people think blogging is a waste of time?
Because many bloggers fail to make money because they have no strategy and they give up before their blog has a chance to become successful.
Blogging is a long term commitment, it doesn’t happen overnight. Google, for instance, will take around 3 months to even rank your site, so expecting big results early on will almost always cause disappointment.
If you want to be successful at blogging, you have to treat it as a business. This means you have to know your target audience and have strategies for blog promotion and monetising your content.
Are personal blogs still relevant?
When blogging first became a thing in the late 90’s a lot of people were writing personal blogs about whatever topic they were interested in. Some people still do this but most bloggers have turned their personal blog into a business blog that makes money with ads, sponsorships or affiliate marketing.
To be able to make money with your blog it’s a good idea not just to write about random topics that interest you, but rather focus on a specific audience and target your blog posts at them by answering their most common questions.
For example, if you love dogs and know a lot about them, you could start a blog about dog care and teach other new dog owners how to care for their dog.
So rather than start a personal or lifestyle blog, I think you have a much better chance at success if you start a niche blog that has a very specific target audience.

Is travel blogging worth it?
I just wanted to mention travel blogging because so many people have rose coloured glasses on when it comes to travel blogging. Yes, travel blogging is also still worth it and it’s a great way to see the world, but just remember that you don’t have to start a travel blog to be able to travel and be a blogger.
You can literally blog about anything and still travel the world and work from any location. Travel blogging is quite competitive, so if you’re considering starting a travel blog, you will have to make yourself stand out from the crowd somehow and learn all about SEO and keyword research so you can get your blog to rank in Google.
The pros & cons of blogging
So now we’ve established that blogging is definitely still worth it, let’s have a look at the pros and cons blogging.
Pros of blogging:
- Location independent (work from home or anywhere in the world)
- Flexible working hours (work as much or as little as you want)
- Make passive income (whether you’re working or not)
- Your blog becomes an asset (you can sell your blog)
Especially when you go travelling, you’ll appreciate having a blog. I just spent 7 weeks travelling and despite me only doing about 2 days of work, my blog still made the same amount of money as it does every other month.

Cons of blogging:
- You have to be self motivated
- Working from home can get lonely
- It can take a while to start making money
It took me 3 months to make my first affiliate sale, so it will help to have some patience in your first year of blogging. This is why I recommend starting a blog as a side hustle, taking your time and learning as much as possible in your first year.

Is blogging still profitable?
Yes! Because blog income is often passive and will accumulate over time, blogging has the ability to be incredibly profitable. Making passive income means you don’t actually have to spend much time working for this money because you already did the work earlier, therefore you have more free time to create more content that in turn will start earning money as well.
I do recommend monetising your blog with affiliate products rather then ads, because to be able to make a decent income from ads you need a lot of traffic. But for affiliate marketing on the other hand you don’t need that much traffic (because you’ll earn a lot more per click), you just need the right traffic (this is where your niche audience comes in handy because this audience will be interested in the same affiliate products).
You can also create digital products or courses and set up automated email funnels and sales pages which can lead to another passive income stream.
Blogging is an investment
One more awesome thing you need to know about blogging is that many bloggers end up selling their blog for 5 or 6 figures!
If your blog is making $2000 every month, it is worth between $74,000 and $81,400. That is not nothing!
So keep this in mind when you’re struggling to make money at the start, because it will be a great motivator to keep you going!
Approach blogging like a marathon, not a sprint and with a bit of patience and some courses that help you get to the next level, you should be able to create a successful blog!
