What is a freebie
An opt in freebie, also known as a lead magnet or a content upgrade, is a free digital product that’s used as an incentive for your readers to sign up to your email list.
As you might know, growing your email list is an important part of building a successful blog or online business. In fact, it’s been said that for every subscriber you have, you’ll make a dollar per month. So if you could grow your list to 10.000 subscribers, you could make $10.000 per month!
This is why your freebies are important >> an irresistible opt in freebie will lead to more people signing up >> which leads to email list growth >> which leads to income growth!
How do you use a freebie
Not many blog visitors sign up to an email list without getting something in return so it’s important that you offer a freebie as an incentive for signing up. Add it to blog posts, your home page and even your about page to make sure your audience can find it easily.
How to promote your freebie
The best way to promote your opt in freebie is with an email sign up form in related blog posts. If your blog topic is related to your freebie and your freebie would be the logical next step for your subscriber, it will make perfect sense for them to sign up.
Because your lead magnet is a digital product, it’s crucial to show an image of it with your email sign up form so your audience can visualise it and know what to expect. Having an attractive mockup image of your freebie is a sure-fire way to increase your signups.

FAQ about freebies
What do you put in a freebie
Your freebie should help your subscriber with one of their most common problems. Your freebie doesn’t have to be a 40 page ebook, it can be something quick and simple like a quick fix to an issue that’s stopping them from progressing.
If you’re not sure what your audience is struggling with, you could check out some Facebook groups that have a similar audience as your blog. Have a look what people are asking and create a freebie around the most common questions.
How do I advertise a freebie
The best way to advertise your freebie is by adding your email sign up form for this freebie in all your blog posts that are related to this topic. Then you can promote these blog posts on social media, Pinterest and organically with SEO.
To make your email sign up forms stand out, it will help tremendously to create an image (mockup) of your freebie. Especially if your freebie is a digital product, it will increase signups if you add an attractive mockup image.
How do I share a freebie
To be able to share your freebie outside your own website, it will help to create a sign up page for this freebie. (For an example of a sign up page click here.)
Once you’ve created a page like this and added your email sign up form and your freebie mockup image, you can copy the url of this page and share it:
- On Pinterest (create a pin that goes directly to your freebie signup page)
- In Facebook groups (in share threads or when someone is struggling with the problem that you solve in your freebie)
- On your own Facebook page or group
- Other social media channels you’re on
How do I get people to download my freebie
For your subscribers to be able to download your opt in freebie you’ll have to upload it somewhere first. You can upload it to your DropBox, Google Drive, your email platform or your WordPress website’s media library. For more instructions how to do this click here.
Once uploaded you’ll need to copy the link and then share that in an automatic email sequence that you set up with your email platform.
