What is a blog niche
A blog niche is the topic that you write about on your blog. Blog niche examples would be: travel, finance, parenting etc.
If you’re starting a blog as a hobby it doesn’t matter too much what blog topic you choose, as long as you know a bit about this topic and you enjoy talking about it.
But if you’re starting a professional blog to make money it’s super important to choose the right blogging niche.
How do I find my blog niche?
You can use my list of blogging niches below to get inspiration for a suitable blog topic idea.
If you want to make money with your blog, you’ve got to make sure that you choose a blog topic with the following 3 criteria:
- You know enough about this topic to create a lot of content.
- This topic is in demand/people are looking for this topic.
- This topic can be monetised in several different ways.
If your chosen blog topic ticks these 3 boxes, you have found yourself a profitable niche!
To make sure your topic has enough demand, you can use a tool like Ubersuggest to see how many searches a particular blog topic gets per month.
Here’s an example of a blog niche with a high search volume.
Don’t worry if your chosen blog topic has a lower search volume, your blog can still be profitable with much lower numbers.
What is a blogging sub niche?
Once you’ve picked your main blogging niche, it’s a good idea to pick a more targeted niche inside this niche, also called a sub niche.
Examples of sub niches would be:
- Travel > Travel Sub Niche = Solo Travel For Women
- Yoga > Yoga Sub Niche = Yoga For New Moms
- Parenting > Parenting Sub Niche = Home Schooling
The advantage of picking a sub niche is that your niche is more targeted at a specific type of audience. Think about it: a travel blog could appeal to all different kinds of people, but a blog about solo travel for women will clearly attract women that want to travel alone.
Having a blog with a clearly defined audience allows you to create more targeted content and is easier to monetise because you can match your affiliate/digital products to your target audience.

Is Lifestyle a good blog niche?
Sometimes new bloggers don’t really know what to blog about, so they call their blog a lifestyle blog and write about random topics.
This would be ok if your blog is a hobby and you’re not trying to make money, but if you want to earn a living from your blog, this strategy (or lack there of) won’t get you anywhere.
If you want to start a lifestyle blog you need to make sure you pick a specific audience and write for them.
So you might be a lifestyle blogger who blogs about family life, kids, staying fit and eating healthy and your audience are 25-35 year old women with young kids that are trying to get their bodies back in shape.
Or you might be a 23 year old expat, living in another country while blogging about your experiences and how to create this lifestyle. Your audience are 20 something women that want to travel and learn how to start a blog or online business that can pay for this lifestyle.
As you can see, having a clearly defined audience will make it easier for you to create content because you know exactly who you’re helping and you can target all your content (blog posts/ digital products/email optin freebies) around their needs.
It will also help you grow your email list, as you’ll be able to create an optin freebie that is super relevant and helpful for your audience, resulting in more sign ups, return visitors, loyal followers and sales.
Ok so now you know a bit more about what a blog niche is, it’s time to check out my Ultimate Blog Niche List below.

Should You Niche Down More?
A lot of the blog topics in the list above are still quite broad and it’s always a good idea to niche down a bit more and pick a specific target audience.
For example:
Instead of picking the niche: Weight Loss For Women, you could niche down to: Weight Loss For Women Over 50 With Thyroid Problems.
Or: Weight Loss For Women Who Suffer From Post Natal Depression.
As you can see, this niched down blog topic makes the the niche Weight Loss For Women seem very broad.
And imagine how ‘at home’ someone would feel on your blog if you’re describing their exact situation and offer help for their exact problems. They’ll instantly fall in love with your blog and become your newest loyal fan!
So if you can, I highly recommend niching down.
Especially if you know a lot about your niched down topic, it can greatly benefit your blog.

Thanks for sharing with us
Great post, great for anyone wanting to start a blog, really informative breakdown of niches and target topics. Thanks for sharing.
Didn’t know there’s so much niches to talk about,
can you provide us with a way to determine how competitive is this niche?!!
Hi Ramy, you can check in Google to see how many other blogs write about your topic. Don’t be put off if lots of other bloggers talk about this topic, at least it means this topic is popular and in high demand. It will help if you niche down and target your content at a specific audience, this can make you stand out from the other blogs. I saw you signed up for my free course, good luck and let me know if you have any questions.
All the best
Lisa
