What exactly is a blog and why should I start one? You may wonder.
Good question.
The word blog is short for web log, an online log/journal that a person keeps for personal, educational or business use.
Most people start a blog to share information, educate their readers, attract a following and create an online income.
Even though blogging can start out as a hobby for many of us, it can quickly grow into a profitable business. A business that has unlimited growing potential.
How exciting is that?
Imagine creating your own business?
From scratch.
The satisfaction!
Starting a blog is one of the most exciting things I’ve ever done and there’s a good chance that you’ll love it too. If you’re not completely convinced, here are another 10 good reasons to start a blog.
I may earn a small commission for affiliate links in this post at no extra cost to you. Please read my disclaimer for more information.
If you start a blog you become your own boss. #Booya! You will be the creative force behind all that happens in your part of the blogosphere.
Not being dependent on someone else for a job or an income will be truly liberating. I’m not saying to quit your job straight away. But it is completely achievable to start a blog as a side hustle with the long term goal of quitting your job and blogging full-time.
Working from home is a great bonus when you’re a blogger. No more 9 to 5, no more commuting to work, imagine the time you’ll save! With flexible working hours you’ll be able to spend more time doing the things you love. Especially when you have kids or if you want to travel, blogging gives you the freedom and convenience to work when, and where you want, creating a lifestyle that is more enjoyable.
Compared to starting any other business, starting a blog is ridiculously cheap. Your main costs are: your domain name and your web hosting.
You can buy a domain name at Namecheap at around $15 (or you can get it for free for the first year when hosting your blog with Bluehost.)
You can host your blog with Bluehost for only $2.95 USD per month. (Bluehost is the WordPress no. 1 recommended web host) I especially recommend Bluehost for beginners because they do all the technical stuff for you (like installing WordPress and an SSL certificate).
If you want to find out how to set up your blog with Bluehost, please read:

So let’s add up these staggering business start-up costs:
Web Hosting $2.95 x 12 months = $35.40
+ a whopping $0 for your free domain name = $35.40
Do you know any other business you could start up for less than $40?
I can’t think of any…

Starting a blog will definitely broaden your horizons on many topics. There will be a technical learning curve when you learn to set up your blog in WordPress. When writing blog posts you’ll need to learn how to optimise your blog for search engines (SEO) with relevant keywords. And to make sure the world sees your blog you’ll have to figure out how to promote it on social media. Blogging will always push you to learn something new.
Sharing your content and promoting your blog is a great way to build your confidence. Because you’ll want your blog to succeed, you’ll push the boundaries of your comfort zone and put yourself out there. Not everyone is comfortable making youtube videos or hosting webinars but even if you’re an introvert, you can promote your blog in ways you are comfortable with.
Blogging is a fantastic creative outlet. First of all you get to design your blog, your brand and your logo (if you need some help with this, here’s quick DIY guide to designing a brand for your blog). Also the writing process is a creative outlet that lets you share your knowledge and opinions with your readers. And if you promote your blog on Pinterest you get to create these awesome looking pins with Canva. Like this one:
Of course it’s fine to start a blog as a hobby. But blogging takes effort, so it’s always nice to get a little reward for your effort. Most people start a blog to monetise it in some way or another. You can easily make some money with your blog by displaying ads or adding relevant affiliate links to your blog posts. You can also work with other brands or businesses and write sponsored posts to promote their products. Another way of monetising your blog is to create your own product and sell it. And last but not least, you can also start a blog to drive traffic to your online service based business.
Whether your blog is about personal growth or how to make money online, it always feels good to help other people. If you know a lot about a certain topic, it makes sense to create your blog around this topic. To monetise your blog you could share your knowledge in an ebook or online course.
A great thing about blogging is that you are not alone. There are lots of like minded blogger babes out there that you can connect with. Leave a friendly comment on a blog post that you found helpful to get a conversation started and join a few facebook groups and you’ll be sure to make some new friends.
Yes, blogging is exciting! It is something that is completely yours, something that you have created all by yourself, something to be proud of.
The exhilaration when your readers comment on your new blog post, or when they like and share your content on social media and of course the thrill of making your first sale all make blogging a pretty fun job.
It is a job that feels like a hobby, a job that you look forward to. #Monyay!
